Reuters Betrays Its Own Journalist While AIPAC Cheers
August 29, 2025
On Monday, Israel murdered Reuters cameraman Hussam al-Masri in the middle of a live broadcast. He was on the roof operating Reuters’ live feed from a location the agency had used openly for weeks when Israeli fire struck Nasser Hospital—twice in minutes. Hussam was killed instantly.
The truth could not be clearer. But instead of leveraging their global power to demand accountability for their own journalist, Reuters published Israeli propaganda.
Israel claimed it had targeted a “Hamas camera.” That was a lie. It was not Hamas. It was Hussam, Reuters’ own cameraman, killed while broadcasting live with Reuters’ equipment.
And yet Reuters ran Israel’s lie in the headline. Only in the photo caption did they quietly admit that the destroyed gear belonged to Hussam, their contractor. The result was an extraordinary betrayal of journalistic ethics, integrity, and humanity itself.
A Resignation That Exposed the Rot
The decision sparked outrage from within. Veteran photojournalist Valerie Zink resigned in protest, writing:
“I can’t in good conscience continue to work for Reuters given their betrayal of journalists in Gaza and culpability in the assassination of 245 colleagues.”
Her stand points to something bigger: the rot in Western media’s coverage of Gaza.
CNN staff have privately described their Gaza coverage as “journalistic malpractice.”
The New York Times banned reporters from using words like “genocide” or “ethnic cleansing.”
The BBC shelved an investigation into Israel’s deliberate attacks on doctors.
Across the industry, editors and executives have sanitized genocide, laundered Israeli talking points, and shielded war criminals from accountability.
Media Complicity Makes AIPAC’s Job Easy
This isn’t just bad journalism. It’s political cover. When mainstream outlets repeat Israel’s lies, they give AIPAC the perfect environment to operate in Washington.
It’s much easier for politicians to cash AIPAC’s checks when the headline says Israel destroyed a “Hamas camera” instead of “Israel murdered a Reuters journalist.”
The result: U.S. taxpayer dollars keep flowing to fund bombs, tanks, and bullets that slaughter civilians and silence journalists.
Why Track AIPAC Exists
AIPAC and Western media are working hand in hand. The media launders Israel’s propaganda. AIPAC turns that propaganda into political power. Together, they protect war criminals and keep the weapons flowing.
That’s why Track AIPAC exists: to expose the propaganda, follow the money, and take on the politicians who sell out their constituents for AIPAC’s cash.
An informed public demands accountability. And accountability is what AIPAC and its allies fear most.
The Bottom Line
Journalists should not be slandered and smeared to cover up war crimes. Palestinians should not be murdered with American weapons and American tax dollars. And Americans should not be left in the dark by media institutions too timid, or too corrupt, to tell the truth.
Hussam al-Masri deserved better. So did the 245 journalists Israel has killed since October 2023. So do the millions of Palestinians trapped under siege.
And so do we.
Take Action
At Track AIPAC, we’re building the movement to hold politicians accountable for every check they cash from AIPAC while looking away from genocide. We’re calling out the media institutions laundering propaganda. And we’re organizing to defeat the war machine that thrives on lies.
If you believe the truth matters, and that human lives should never be traded for lobbyist dollars, join us. Together, we can demand accountability and help end the cycle of impunity.
